U.S Navy Aircraft Carrier
Carrier Combat by David Wragg, Aircraft carriers were used in many of the crucial naval engagements of the Second World War, ranging front the Royal Navy's hunt for the Bismarck and the protection of Convoy PQ18 in the Arctic, to the US Navy's victories against the Japanese in the Coral Sea and at Midway in the Pacific theatre. It was superior American sea power that finally drove the Japanese into bloody retreat and towards ultimate defeat. In the years that followed the Second World War, aircraft carriers played a vital role as capital ships in the projection of power across the globe. This was particularly so in the opening conflicts of the Cold War period when carrier air power was used to effect in Korea and at Suez during the 1950s. The US made extensive use of carrier-based aircraft during the Vietnam war as did Britain in the later Falklands conflict. In 1991, US Navy carriers were instrumental in the successful prosecution of Operation Desert Storm. Combining the author's own narrative with vivid first-hand accounts by those who served aboard the ships, or with the carrier-borne naval and marine air squadrons, Carrier Combat is the dramatic story of the aircraft carrier at war. Fully illustrated with archive photographs in colour and black and white, it will appeal to all with an interest in naval air power.
From the Flight Deck: An Anthology of the Best Writing on Carrier Warfare by Peter B. Mersky, -- Features the best fiction and nonfiction writing about the fabled history of carrier aviation and warfare -- Covers such topics as the development of carrier aviation and technology, carrier combat operations by U.S. and foreign navies, and the Navy's first female fighter pilots -- Includes essays by Peter B. Mersky that introduce and place each excerpt in context "Prepare to hunch aircraft!" One can almost hear the order booming from the island's loudspeaker. In From the Flight Deck, the exhilarating and always dangerous world of aircraft career aviation is covered in thirty-two excerpts of the best fiction and nonfiction writing on the subject. Beginning with the first success in 1910 by American aviator Eugene Ely, the anthology then covers British operations during World War I and the unique contributions to carrier warfare made by the U.S and British navies during the 1920s and 1930s. World War II and the Korean War are also well represented -- with excerpts from such American classics as Walter Lord's Day of Infamy, Ted Lawson's Thirty Seconds over Tokyo, and James A. Michener's The Bridges of Toko Ri -- as the period during which carriers and their crews matured into the indispensable weapon systems we nearly take for granted today. Experiments with larger and more capable aircraft, as well as advances in a vast array of carrier-related technology, bring the reader to the present day, with selections by such noted authors as Norman Polmar (Aircraft Carriers) and George Wilson (Supercarrier). The diverse experiences of U.S. and foreign naval aviators in the Suez Operation in 1956, the French and American wars in Vietnam, the Falklands War, the Persian Gulf War, and therecent Allied air campaign in Bosnia are all covered, often through eyewitness accounts. For example, in Peter B. Mersky's book, RF-8 Crusader Units Over Cuba and Vietnam, he relates a chilling first-person account of the fire on board the U.S.S. Oriskany in 1966.
